How to Replace a Bathroom Vanity Step-by-Step (Long Island Homeowner Guide)

Replacing a bathroom vanity is one of the fastest ways to modernize your bathroom without doing a full renovation. Whether you’re upgrading for style, improving storage, or replacing water-damaged cabinetry, a new vanity can dramatically change the space.
But vanity replacement involves plumbing, leveling, sealing, and proper reconnection — and small mistakes can lead to leaks or floor damage.
If you’re a homeowner in Nassau County or Suffolk County, here’s what you should know before starting.

Tools & Materials You’ll Need
Tools
Adjustable wrench
Channel-lock pliers
Drill/screwdriver
Utility knife
Level
Tape measure
Bucket + towels
Caulk gun
Supplies
New vanity
Faucet (if not included)
New water supply lines (recommended)
P-trap / drain components (if needed)
Silicone caulk (bathroom rated)
Shims
Plumber’s tape (Teflon)
Step 1: Measure Everything First
Before removing your old vanity, measure:
Width and depth
Drain height
Hot/cold supply line placement
Wall-to-wall clearance
Door swing space
Many Long Island homes — especially older ones — have plumbing that isn’t perfectly centered. Make sure your new vanity will align before buying.
Step 2: Shut Off the Water
Turn off the shutoff valves under the sink.
If they’re corroded, leaking, or don’t close fully, stop there. That issue should be addressed before proceeding.
Turn the faucet on to relieve pressure and place a bucket under the P-trap.
Step 3: Disconnect Plumbing
Carefully disconnect:
Hot and cold supply lines
P-trap
Drain assembly
Tip: Even if supply lines look fine, replacing them during a vanity swap is smart preventive maintenance.
Step 4: Remove the Vanity Top (If Separate)
Cut through any silicone between backsplash and wall.
Check underneath for mounting clips or screws.
Lift carefully — vanity tops can be heavy.
Step 5: Remove the Old Vanity Cabinet
Remove drawers/doors
Unscrew mounting screws from studs
Cut caulk along floor
Slide cabinet out
If you see water damage behind the vanity (common in Long Island homes), address it before installing the new one.
Step 6: Prep the Wall & Floor
This step makes the difference between “DIY looking” and professional.
Patch holes
Remove old caulk
Check floor level
Locate wall studs
Step 7: Level and Secure the New Vanity
Set cabinet in place and use a level.
Use shims to ensure it’s:
Level front to back
Level side to side
Secure into studs.
An unlevel vanity can cause:
Countertop cracks
Poor drainage
Doors not closing properly
Step 8: Install Faucet and Drain
Install faucet and drain before placing the top if possible.
Follow manufacturer instructions and avoid over-tightening.
Step 9: Install Vanity Top & Seal
Apply silicone where:
Counter meets cabinet
Backsplash meets wall
Allow proper curing time before using sink.
Step 10: Reconnect Plumbing and Test
Reconnect supply lines and drain.
Turn water on slowly.
Check for leaks using a dry paper towel around each fitting.
Even a small drip can cause damage over time.
